Each segment of the class focuses on different body parts, based on the principles founded by Mary Bagot Stack in the 1930s. I find that the warm up, with simple, repetitive steps, uses the whole body, whilst enabling the mind to forget the 'outside' world.
Posture exercises, using the breath to relax, whilst focussing on one's alignment of upper and lower body, help me to rethink my stature, whilst boiling the kettle! I have also found how, through joint mobility sequences, using arms and legs, muscles have lengthened and relaxed.
I thoroughly enjoy the freedom of 'bare feet' in classes. This has enabled not only my feet to gain strength, but my ankles, calves and knees.' Central control' or, core work further develops abdominal and back muscles. Classes usually finish with a fun, lively, communal dance and a graceful movement phrase to inspire and re-energize.
However, there is no pressure or tension exerted on the body. Each person can develop at his/her own pace. This, I find rare. There is a commitment to the body, mind and soul, that is unique in the fast-pace environment, in which we now live.
I have experienced other 'fitness' classes to be competitive, as well as isolating. On the contrary, Fitness League supports a well-being community through its active membership. There is fun, laughter and support, to be discovered at every class. It truly is a rare and unique community in which to belong.
