All of our instructors were asked to feedback the best and worst things about being and instructor. We had a massive response and so we had to group together similar responses to give an overall feel to reflect everyone’s responses. The notes below are a summary of the responses. Please also read the article titled the worst things about being an instructor.
1) Making a difference….
Seeing others benefit from my classes through
enhanced confidence, increased fitness and achieving their own goals and the smiles on their faces at the end of the class give me a buzz!
Seeing an individual do something they didn’t think they could
Making a difference to someone’s life by making them fitter and stronger
Having students return from my class after a break, trying something else, and having a baby etc. because they love it so much
I love teaching, when students say to me that always after yoga class they get the best sleep of the week, I feel happy
Seeing people’s confidence grow and waistline shrink before your eyes
Watching a client gain strength both emotionally and physically and the happiness and proudness that goes with it
2) Something for me that I love to do
I’m essentially setting up my own business, and I’m 100% responsible for making it succeed or fail, which is exciting… and scary…but mostly empowering
I get to sing and dance everyday
The music is booty shakingly good
An excuse to be outrageous
Wearing clothes that normally you would never get away with
Teaching is my night out it’s the nearest thing to clubbing for me these days
Having a career that also keeps me fit and healthy
Doing something I love, something I’m passionate about!
Being able to be creative
3) Being part of something bigger…
Seeing the look of exhilaration as someone enjoys something they never thought they would
Having a great client base – a community
Having a great network of colleagues with the same interest and standards as yourself but all individual in their approach – a wealth of knowledge!
When going to class becomes your social life for the week and you look forward to seeing everyone next week
Making great friends with your participants
Knowing that you make a difference to the health and wellbeing of your customers
Watching a client make new friends and gain confidence working as a team
Watching someone’s attitude towards exercise change over time from being one of fear and loathing to one of challenge and acceptance
Making people happy and interact I feel a lucky person to be able to do this
Providing an hour of escapism for students (and instructors) away from demands of home and work life
The long lasting friendships among students, started through coming to class
If I convert just a couple of people out there to world music, and internationalizing music tastes then I’ll consider that a good thing
4) The Smiles
The Cheshire cat like smile on someone’s face when they begin to experience fitness for the first time
Giggles that come from the crowd as two people face each other instead of facing the same way and realise that if they continue it will be a head-on shimmy challenge
Watching folk arrive at class tired and stressed and leaving with a smile on their face
The smile on someone’s face when they are absolutely smashed from your class
Watching people leave class with a huge grin on their faces after coming in looking completely jaded with no energy
Watching a client arrive at a session (even in the rain) pale tired and sometimes emotional but leaving the session (every time)

5) It gives me choice
Being my own boss and choosing my own hours
Choosing what I want to specialise in and what direction I want to take my business as a result – the fitness industry is an exciting place to be right now with all the different products on offer!
Doing what you love for a living!
Not being sat behind a desk all day
6) The Special moments
The moment someone grasps the moves in a routine
Teaching kids and watching them love experiencing something new
Seeing a group perform the same moves, in time
Seeing people knowing the routines and anticipating the next move
Seeing people go from shy and nervous in the first class to confident and smiling a few weeks down the line when they start to master the moves – just the best feeling in the world
A great team teach with good chemistry and banter
When someone finally manages to pull off lunges correctly!
The whoops mid routine when you know that everyone in the room is having a great time
Your student texts you if they can’t get there, even apologising
